The first five seconds
A visitor decides in five seconds whether to keep reading. If those five seconds don't say what you do, where you do it, and how to book — they leave. This is the #1 reason contractor sites with real traffic don't convert.
- The H1 names the service AND the service area (e.g. 'Pressure Washing in Bensalem, PA').
- The phone number is visible and tappable at the top on mobile.
- A quote or booking button is above the fold.
- A photo or hero visual matches the trade (real work, not stock).
Mobile speed & Core Web Vitals
70%+ of contractor site traffic is mobile. If the site takes more than 3 seconds to render on a 4G phone, half your visitors are gone before they see anything. Google's PageSpeed Insights (free) grades it. Anything under 90 on mobile is the fixable version of leaking leads.
- Largest Contentful Paint under 2.5s on mobile.
- No layout shift when the page loads (CLS < 0.1).
- Images are lazy-loaded and correctly sized.
- Hero image has fetchPriority='high'.
Service-area pages
One long homepage listing every town you serve does not rank. Google needs a distinct page per service-plus-city combination. This is the single highest-leverage change for a contractor site that isn't ranking.
- One page per ZIP or town you serve.
- Each page has unique intro text — no copy-paste with the town name swapped.
- Local references: neighborhoods, landmarks, HOAs, or a real recent job.
- Internal link from the homepage to every service-area page.
Quote forms & lead routing
The form gets used only if it's short, mobile-friendly, and lands somewhere you actually check. Long forms kill conversion. Forms that email a mailbox you check once a day cost you jobs.
- 5 fields max: name, phone, email, service, ZIP.
- Phone field is tel-type and click-to-call on mobile.
- Submissions text you within 60 seconds.
- Auto-reply confirms the request and sets a callback expectation.
GBP alignment
Google Business Profile is where 60–80% of local calls come from. If GBP name, address, phone, categories, and service list don't match the website exactly, both suffer.
- GBP name matches the website header and legal business name.
- Address and phone match the website footer character-for-character.
- GBP categories cover every service you sell.
- Photos on GBP are the same real-job photos on the website.
Redesign vs rebuild — the decision
Not every stalled site needs a full redesign. Use this decision framework to know which one applies to you before spending money.
- Rebuild if: no service-area pages, no schema, slow on mobile, and no ranking pages worth preserving.
- Redesign if: some pages are ranking but the site converts poorly on mobile.
- Fix in place if: only the CTAs, phone visibility, or form length are the problem.
- Migrate if: you're on a locked platform (Jobber Websites, 180 Sites, Hibu) and can't fix the SEO ceiling from inside.
